Syracuse University Undergraduate Research Day and Open House

We are pleased to announce the third Syracuse Physics Undergraduate Research Day & Open House on Saturday November the 14th, 2009.

This event will be geared towards undergraduate physics majors at schools within a few hours driving distance from Syracuse. Our event last year was a great success, with over 35 students from 10 institutions attending. We are looking forward to another exciting day this year, where students can:

Present their research through posters and talks.

Meet undergraduate physics majors from other schools.

Learn about the physics graduate program at Syracuse.

We have reserved a block of hotel rooms which will be available free of charge to students on a first-come-first-served basis, so please register early!

Information for Attendees

Location

Other than the lab tours and dinner, all of the events of the Undergraduate Research Day & Open House will take place on the 2nd floor of the Physics Building. Talks will be given in the main conference room (Room 202/204). Posters will be displayed in the north-side hallway on the 2nd floor. Refreshments and lunch will be served in room 202/204 and in the lobby near the elevator on the 2nd floor.

Talks

  • Length: each student talk will be ~ 10 minutes long followed by 5 minutes for questions and change of the speaker
  • Format: the conference room will have a standard laptop projector. In addition, there will be an overhead projector for presenters using transparencies as well as a whiteboard.
  • Laptops: there will be one departmental PC laptop with PowerPoint on the lecture stand which all speakers are welcome to use. However, students may also use personal laptops, if necessary. For using the departmental laptop, please bring your talk on a USB memory stick and load it onto the laptop before your session begins – either in the morning before 10AM or during the snack break in the afternoon. Similarly, for those who prefer to use a personal laptop, please try connecting to the projector before the session begins to make sure everything is compatible. A Syracuse graduate student will be present to assist with checking the talks in advance.

Posters

  • Location: posters will be displayed along the 2nd floor hallway on the north side of the Physics Building. This will be just outside the room where the talks will be given and close to the location of the refreshments.
  • Setup time: please hang posters from the attached clip mounts (no tacks will be necessary) along the hallway on the 2nd floor before 10AM. A Syracuse graduate student will be present to assist with hanging posters in the hall. Please remove posters at the end of the day.

Lab tours

  • Tours of research labs in the Physics Department will be given in one 60-minute blocks, as listed in the latest schedule. Syracuse graduate students will lead visitors to the various labs at the appropriate times. During registration you will be assigned to one of four groups that are lead to the labs.

Meals

  • Lunch: we will have several selections of pizza in the hallway just outside of the main conference room.
  • Dinner: Due to the large number of participants dinner is now at Panda West an Chinese Restaurant that has enough space for all of us. At the conclusion of the events in the Physics Building, we will all walk across campus together to enjoy dinner.
